Changing Seasons: The Kitchen Garden in Autumn

The Grove’s kitchen garden has always been at the heart of our cooking, but autumn is when it truly comes into its own. As the season settles in, the garden becomes a living pantry; supplying the kitchen with herbs, roots, greens and squash that shape the menu in The Garden Rooms. It’s a space that reflects our ethos: food grown close to home, cooked with care, and inspired by the country and coast that surround us.
The autumn menu leans into this philosophy. Our menu states, our chefs “draw from our garden, Norfolk’s farmers, fishermen and artisan producers to keep food miles low and every dish rooted in locality.”
This commitment to locality isn’t just a principle – it’s a flavour profile. Garden beetroot appears in multiple dishes, from the Beetroot Tartare to the Garden Beetroot & Chickpea Curry, each one showcasing the earthy sweetness that comes from vegetables pulled at their peak. Seasonal squash features throughout the new dishes too, from the Roasted Garden Squash with maple and crispy sage to the honey‑roasted squash served alongside the venison stew. These dishes aren’t just autumnal; they’re Norfolk autumnal.
The kitchen garden also informs the way our chefs build balance and freshness into richer seasonal plates. Herbs grown just steps from the restaurant – thyme, sage, mint, fennel tops – appear across the menu, adding brightness to slow‑braised, roasted and confit dishes. Even our Market Soup is made “with local produce and ingredients picked straight from our kitchen garden,” served simply with artisan bread.
It’s everyday seasonality, expressed with confidence.

But The Garden Rooms menu isn’t shaped by the garden alone. The Grove’s unique position; tucked between countryside and coast, gives our chefs access to Norfolk’s full larder. The county’s agricultural heritage brings us exceptional game, root vegetables, dairy and orchard fruit, while the North Norfolk coastline offers world‑class seafood. You see this duality throughout the menu: Pan‑fried Gilt‑head Bream Fillet with razor clams and crispy capers; English Steamed Mussels in tomato, fennel and oregano; Grilled Crevettes in lime, chilli and ginger butter. These dishes sit naturally alongside pheasant, duck, venison and garden‑grown vegetables, creating a menu that feels unmistakably Norfolk.
Autumn puddings continue the theme. The Apple & Blackberry Bread and Butter Pudding and Autumn Eton Mess celebrate orchard fruit and hedgerow berries, while the Pumpkin & Maple Syrup Cheesecake nods to the season’s deeper, sweeter flavours. Even here, the garden’s influence is clear; greengage, fig, pear and pumpkin all appear as stars of the plate.
The result is a menu that feels grounded, generous and true to place. The kitchen garden provides the backbone; Norfolk’s farmers and fishermen bring breadth; and the coast adds its unmistakable freshness. Together, they create a dining experience that is both seasonal and deeply rooted – a taste of Norfolk, expressed through The Grove.
